Efficient screw transmission and load holding are different functions. The actuator's complete design determines the holding arrangement.
Ask about the complete actuator
Thomson explains that backdriving behavior varies by actuator design and that some ball-screw arrangements can backdrive unless the complete design provides holding. Primary reference: Thomson actuator backdriving.
A ball-screw component description therefore does not settle what a vertical or otherwise driven load does when drive power is absent. Identify the required state and the actual mechanism intended to provide it. Keep motion conversion and load holding in different requirement fields.
A hypothetical function-boundary worksheet
Imagine a fictional vertical-axis offer that identifies a ball screw and motor but gives no holding-function statement. A second offer identifies a complete actuator with a documented holding basis for its stated load case. The first offer is not automatically unsafe or rejected; its holding question remains unanswered. The second still needs its application scope reconciled.
Write rows for normal positioning, power-off state, load case, holding mechanism and supporting reference. No actual holding force, brake rating or HM arrangement is invented. The example is a procurement review, not a test procedure for releasing an installed load.
Preserve state behavior through the project
Ask how permitted operation and holding requirements are verified for the proposed configuration. Include relevant changes in load direction, duty or connected hardware in later reviews. A motor energized during one demonstration does not establish the required unpowered state.
The final record should name the held-state requirement and its complete design basis, with the screw identity preserved for its own purpose. This prevents an efficient transmission component from silently acquiring a holding claim it never made. Actual operating and protective functions remain tied to the responsible application design.
Customer Questions
Does every ball screw prevent reverse movement?
No. Evaluate the complete actuator and its identified holding design.
Does a powered positioning test establish power-off holding?
No. Those are different state requirements.
What must a holding statement identify?
The complete configuration, load case, required state and supporting design reference.
