Extract named status flags with their documented bit masks rather than interpreting the complete word as one flag.
Define the bit positions
Beckhoff describes bitwise AND for bit operands. A mask retains only the positions set in both the input and the mask. Primary reference: bitwise AND.
A status word may contain independent flags rather than one continuous numeric measurement. The interface’s bit numbering and flag meanings must accompany it. A nonzero complete word does not identify which individual condition is present.
A hypothetical status word
Assume a fictional eight-bit status 1010_0100, hexadecimal 0xA4. Define bit 0 as the least significant position. To examine bit 2, use mask 0000_0100(0x04): the AND result is 0x04, so that position is set.
For bit 3, mask 0x08 gives zero, so that position is clear under the same convention. Comparing the complete 0xA4 with 0x04 for equality would instead fail, because other positions are also set. This original exercise assigns no real machine alarm meaning to either bit.
Keep interpretation separate from extraction
Prepare a table of raw word, mask, extracted result, bit convention and documented flag meaning. Record reserved or undefined positions without inventing a process interpretation.
Ask how the actual application handles simultaneous flags and stale data. The bitwise calculation can be correct while the status meaning is wrong if its source definition is missing. This worksheet prevents a decoding shortcut from concealing that distinction in an alarm or diagnostic record.
