MQTT Last Will and Heartbeats: Define the Meaning of Connection Status

Distinguish MQTT connection-loss notification from evidence that the monitored application is still producing useful observations.

Distinguish MQTT connection-loss notification from evidence that the monitored application is still producing useful observations.

Define what the notification means

OASIS MQTT 5 defines Will publication for specified connection/session conditions, subject to its timing rules. That notification is not a complete application-health assessment. Primary reference: MQTT 5 Will behavior.

A fictional connected but stalled producer

Imagine a monitoring connection remains active while the application stops updating its measurement sequence. An observer sees no connection-loss notification. That absence does not establish that new measurements continue. A separate application-progress field or heartbeat contract would need to describe what work it actually represents.

In a second hypothetical case, a connection interruption produces a notification after the applicable detection and delay rules. Its arrival time is not necessarily the instant a physical process stopped. Keep occurrence evidence, connection evidence and notification receipt in separate rows rather than naming all three machine stopped.

Keep health and communication contracts explicit

Record the relevant Will meaning and the independently defined application-progress indicator, if one is proposed. Ask what updates the heartbeat, what interval is expected and what conditions can leave communication active while useful work pauses. Do not infer that any periodically changing field proves the whole application is functioning.

A review example should include normal reconnect and application stall as separate scenarios, with expected records determined by the actual design. This guide changes no Keep Alive, Will or heartbeat settings. No MQTT connection or health monitor is claimed on HM machinery. The useful outcome is a statement of exactly which evidence supports communication status and which supports application progress.

Customer Questions

Does no Will prove application progress?

The evidence boundary is narrower.

Is Will receipt the exact physical-stop time?

Keep timing rules and occurrence evidence.

Is any heartbeat full health proof?

Define the work it represents.
