Postheat and Post-Weld Heat Treatment: Name the Intended Metallurgical Purpose

Read the purpose and timing of postheat separately from a specified post-weld heat treatment.

Library dates organize the collection. Actual publication and revision dates are shown separately.

Two operations after welding can answer different metallurgical questions.

Retain the stated purpose

TWI distinguishes post-heating to promote hydrogen evolution from post-weld heat treatment. The names should retain the intended metallurgical purpose rather than being treated as synonyms. Primary reference: TWI technical explanation.

An actual heat-treatment description needs its material, procedure identity and required outcome. A generic heated-after-welding field omits which condition is being controlled and what evidence is expected.

Compare fictional instructions

Suppose hypothetical document A specifies an operation for hydrogen diffusion after welding. Document B specifies a separately defined treatment addressing material properties or residual stress. A review merges them into one checkbox because both occur after the joint is made.

That checkbox loses the different purposes. It also gives no evidence that one operation fulfills the other document’s requirement. These fictional records supply no temperatures, holding times or authorization to heat an actual assembly.

Keep the purpose with the record

Create separate rows for operation name, procedure reference, material scope, timing and intended outcome. Retain the corresponding temperature/time record and the evidence the actual requirement calls for.

Ask the fabricator to reconcile any terminology change before comparing records or accepting a substituted treatment. This is a document interpretation task, not a recipe. Keeping the named purpose visible helps ensure that an operation addressing hydrogen is not silently presented as proof of a different property or stress condition.

Customer Questions

Are postheat and PWHT interchangeable labels?

The cited descriptions retain different intended purposes.

Does being after welding establish equivalence?

Timing alone does not identify the operation’s objective.

Does the example provide a treatment cycle?

It compares fictional document roles without process settings.
