5/3 Valve Centre Conditions: Closed, Exhausted and Pressurized Are Different States

Compare the declared centre paths of a 5/3 valve instead of treating neutral as one universal actuator condition.

Library dates organize the collection. Actual publication and revision dates are shown separately.

A centre position needs its own internal connection definition.

Retain the exact centre-function symbol

Norgren distinguishes all-ports-blocked, centre-open-exhaust and centre-open-pressure functions. Keep the selected symbol and variant identifiable. Primary reference: Norgren centre-function variants.

The phrase neutral position leaves the relevant air paths unspecified. Read the manufacturer's function diagram and identify what it says about the working connections. The actuator and load then need their actual system-level interpretation; a centre label does not establish a universal position-holding or protective result.

An invented neutral-state comparison

Imagine three offers each list 5/3 but name different centre functions. The application note asks for a defined condition during a pause. Put the three actual symbols beside that requirement and ask the responsible designer to assess which arrangement matches it. Do not fill every paused-state row with stays still merely because the valve has a centre.

The worksheet should record requested pause behavior, documented paths, supply conditions, actual load relationship and accepted evidence. The example chooses no HM valve or safe state. It does not instruct testing a suspended load by changing valve commands.

Preserve the whole pause-state basis

Ask what component and circuit evidence supports the intended actuator behavior during the defined pause. Other leakage, load and supply conditions may still matter after the centre paths are identified. Keep any required independent holding function separately documented.

When the valve variant changes, review the paused-state evidence even if its size and connector are unchanged. This guide identifies a concrete functional comparison without treating blocked ports as guaranteed indefinite holding, exhaust as guaranteed motion in one direction or pressure-connected paths as universal balance under every rod geometry.

Customer Questions

Does 5/3 identify the centre paths completely?

No. Retain the selected centre-function symbol.

Does neutral guarantee the actuator stays still?

No. Review the complete load and circuit basis.

Can blocked ports prove indefinite holding?

No. That conclusion requires its own evidence.
