Define the Phase or Process Boundary

NPTEL's humidification lecture describes adiabatic saturation as water evaporating into an air stream, increasing its humidity ratio. Its chart discussion distinguishes the dew-point path at unchanged humidity ratio until condensation begins.

Review a Hypothetical Comparison

Take an invented inlet humidity ratio W=0.010 kg/kg dry air. A specified humidification endpoint W=0.015 represents addition of 0.005 kg water per kg dry air. For 50 kg/h dry air, that assigned pickup is 0.25 kg/h. A cooling-to-dew-point path from the same inlet instead retains W=0.010 until the first condensation; reaching saturation does not mean that 0.25 kg/h water was added. The final temperatures and energy balance require separate state information.

Keep the Evidence with the Decision

Draw the water and energy arrows for the proposed process. Identify whether saturation was approached by liquid evaporation or by heat removal without water addition. Retain makeup-water state in a full adiabatic balance; the word adiabatic does not mean all stream enthalpy terms disappear.

The endpoint is hypothetical, not a prediction of attainable saturated air. No cooler duty, dew-point temperature or exact equality between measured wet bulb and adiabatic saturation temperature is supplied.

Customer Questions

Do both paths add moisture?

No. Cooling to dew point retains the initial humidity ratio until condensation starts.

Does adiabatic mean no water energy enters?

Water entering the boundary still carries its own energy.

Does the pickup determine endpoint temperature?

Not alone. State relations and the complete energy balance are needed.
