Barcode Reading or Print Verification: Choose the Evidence the Trial Needs

Separate barcode decoding, approved data checks and symbol-quality verification before specifying a coding trial, report or inspection function.

Library dates organize the collection. Actual publication and revision dates are shown separately.

A scanner beep answers a narrower question than a barcode-quality report. Define the evidence required before a coding demonstration becomes an acceptance decision.

Separate Three Questions

First ask whether the selected reader decodes the printed symbol. Then compare the decoded fields with the buyer's approved data. Finally, ask whether symbol quality has been measured against the relevant specification. These questions can produce different results. A readable code may contain the wrong batch information; correct encoded information does not by itself establish a print-quality grade.

GS1 describes verification as measurement against the symbol specification and distinguishes a scanner from a verifier. Its General Specifications also explain that data-content accuracy requires an appropriate additional comparison. Keep those distinctions in the trial brief. GS1 General Specifications, section 5.12.5.

Request an Identified Verification Report

GS1's print-quality guidance describes a standards-compliant verifier measuring symbol parameters and producing an overall grade. Required minimum quality depends on the application; a universal grade should not be copied into every machinery enquiry. Identify the symbology and the applicable requirement with the packaging or data owner. GS1 guidance on measuring printed barcode quality.

Ask the report to identify the finished sample, assessment method, equipment and settings needed to interpret the result. Preserve the original report rather than reducing it to an unexplained pass label. The buyer should know which requirement that assessment answers and which checks remain separate.

Use the Pack That Will Be Assessed

GS1 lists contrast, quiet zones, symbol size, deterioration and positioning among common barcode-quality concerns. Packaging and cylindrical placement can affect access to the symbol. Retain the finished-pack reference with the artwork and substrate used for the trial. GS1 barcode-quality checklist.

A flat print proof and a wrapped label on a container should not silently become the same evidence. State where the buyer needs the assessment: before application, after wrapping or after the agreed handling. Changes to stock, position or print setup need a traceable review.

Illustrative Example: One Beep, Three Open Decisions

Hypothetical example: a demonstration scanner decodes a bottle label, but its batch field is not compared with the approved message and no verification report is produced. Record the successful decode under those conditions. Leave the data comparison and symbol-quality assessment open. This example supplies no HM machine result or barcode grade; it shows why one observation should not close three requirements.

Keep Printing and Inspection Scope Distinct

When discussing a batch coding machine, identify the requested printing task separately from readers, verifiers, data comparison, records and rejection. Ask which functions are included in the selected offer and which assessment is performed elsewhere. The published coding page does not make every inspection function standard.

Complete the worksheet before agreeing the trial. Assign an evidence owner to each question and keep the decoded message, approved reference and quality report recognizable as different records. A video of the printing action can support the discussion without replacing those records.

Customer Questions

Does a scanner beep establish a verification grade?

No. Record the decode observation separately from a standards-based symbol-quality assessment and its report.

Does a good print-quality grade prove the batch data is correct?

No. Compare the decoded fields with the approved data reference through the specified content-checking method.

Is a verifier automatically included with a batch coder?

Its inclusion must be explicit in the selected offer. Printing, verification, data comparison and rejection are separate scope questions.
