Best Efficiency Point and Permitted Range: Read Both

The best-efficiency point identifies one favourable duty. It does not define every continuous operating point a pump may be asked to handle.

Library dates organize the collection. Actual publication and revision dates are shown separately.

The best-efficiency point identifies one favourable duty. It does not define every continuous operating point a pump may be asked to handle.

Identify the Physical Basis

Pump behaviour can deteriorate away from its design point. KSB’s operating-behaviour reference distinguishes continuous, short-time, minimum-flow and impermissible ranges rather than assigning one universal usable range around a curve. The selected manufacturer must define the relevant envelope for the actual pump and application. A plotted curve can include points that are not permitted continuously.

Work Through an Example

Suppose a hypothetical supplier identifies a best-efficiency point at 5 m³/h and a reviewed continuous range of 3–7 m³/h. A planned transfer varies from 2 to 6 m³/h as the process changes. The 6 m³/h case fits that illustrative range; the 2 m³/h case needs a different review. Averaging them to 4 m³/h would conceal the low-flow condition. These numbers are invented for interpretation, not offered as a design rule.

Use the Result in the Review

List minimum, usual and maximum flow together with time spent at each. Include start-up, blocked or nearly closed demand, and recirculation if these occur in the selected design. Ask the supplier to mark the approved continuous and transient regions on the submitted curve. Compare the process envelope against those regions before calculating only the efficiency at its typical point.

The storage-tank page supports a discussion of changing transfer demand. Actual pump protection and control arrangements need their own selected scope. This guide helps expose duty-envelope gaps; it does not approve a bypass setting, a dwell time or continuous operation near shut-off.

Customer Questions

Is the whole drawn curve a continuous operating range?

Not necessarily. Obtain the selected permitted envelope.

Can average flow establish compatibility?

No. Extreme duties and their durations may govern the review.

Does a high efficiency prove acceptable suction conditions?

No. Review suction and other limits separately.

Review the actual offered equipment and application separately from this educational example.
