Bleed and Registration Allowance: Two Boundaries with Different Causes

Separate artwork beyond a trimming edge from relative alignment among printing separations.

Library dates organize the collection. Actual publication and revision dates are shown separately.

Extra artwork at a cut boundary and a registration allowance address different geometric problems. Put both on the review drawing when both matter.

Name the two geometric relationships

Bleed extends artwork beyond the intended trim boundary. Registration concerns alignment of separate printing contributions. Registration marks provide alignment references; they are not the same as extra artwork extending beyond the cut. Primary reference: Adobe: bleed and registration marks.

A proposed allowance must identify the variation it is intended to accommodate. A final cut can move relative to printed artwork, while two printed separations can move relative to each other. Increasing extra edge content does not by itself align those separations.

Use a fictional two-error comparison

Imagine a background extends beyond a hypothetical finished edge, but two ink contributions inside the label are offset from each other. The extra background can help avoid an unprinted edge after a shifted cut, yet the internal misaligned colour boundary remains a different observation.

Reverse the situation: aligned separations with no extra background may still reveal an unprinted edge if trimming crosses the intended printed boundary. These examples establish distinct causes and contain no universal bleed size, register tolerance or press capability claim.

Retain separate acceptance evidence

Mark the trim boundary, intended extra artwork and relevant separation boundaries on the approved drawing. Ask which variations the actual print and converting process expects and how each will be assessed. Preserve the relevant marks only where the receiver's workflow calls for them.

Review the finished edge and internal alignment on the actual proof or trial output. Record each against its own agreed requirement. A file containing bleed is not automatically proof of print registration, and aligned marks do not establish that the finished edge received the required artwork across the intended cutting variation.

Customer Questions

Does extra bleed align separate inks?

No. It addresses artwork beyond the trim edge.

Are registration marks the extra edge artwork?

No. They are alignment references.

How should the review distinguish the two?

Retain separate drawings and evidence for trimming and separation alignment.
