Built-Up Edge: Adhered Work Material Is Different from Missing Tool Material

Separate adhered workpiece material at a turning edge from missing tool material before interpreting a changed profile.

Library dates organize the collection. Actual publication and revision dates are shown separately.

A changed cutting profile can contain added deposit, lost tool material or both.

Identify material addition

Harvey describes built-up edge as workpiece material adhering at the cutting tool. Its presence differs from removal of the tool substrate. Primary reference: Harvey technical explanation.

Read fictional before-and-after profiles

Imagine an original edge profile retained in a calibrated section image. A later observation shows a local feature protruding 0.03 mm above that original envelope. A subsequent examination identifies the feature as attached workpiece material.

Another location is 0.02 mm inside the original profile and independently identified as missing substrate. Reporting their net difference as only 0.01 mm of wear would hide two different observations. The invented offsets are not a tool-life limit or a real inspection; they illustrate why deposit and loss should retain separate identities.

Keep evidence with each mechanism

Preserve the original shape, image direction and means used to identify the material. Record deposits and missing regions separately when they coexist. If a deposit later detaches, inspect whether the substrate profile also changed rather than assuming detachment restored the original edge.

A surface photograph alone may leave composition or depth unresolved. Ask which evidence distinguishes added work material from lost tool material before changing a process setting. This worksheet makes that distinction explicit without assigning a cause to every rough surface or selecting a universal remedy.

Customer Questions

Is an outward feature necessarily lost tool material?

Its material identity needs checking.

What does the fictional net difference hide?

Separate deposit and substrate-loss observations.

Does deposit detachment guarantee restoration?

The remaining edge must be examined.
