Camera Field of View and Pixel Sampling: Keep Coverage Separate from Feature Detail

Work out the area in view and the object distance represented by each pixel before comparing inspection-camera proposals.

Library dates organize the collection. Actual publication and revision dates are shown separately.

A camera can include the whole pack in its image while leaving a small feature poorly sampled. Coverage and detail belong in separate rows of the requirement.

Separate the two questions

Field of view describes the object area imaged. Pixel sampling relates that area to the image grid. A sensor's total pixel count answers neither question without the actual view dimensions. Primary reference: Edmund Optics: imaging fundamentals.

For a packaging review, first name the area that must remain visible, including its agreed positional variation. Then identify the feature to distinguish within that area. These requests can conflict: increasing the area covered by the same image grid also increases the object distance represented by one sample.

Calculate a hypothetical comparison

Imagine two proposals that each transmit 2,000 horizontal pixels. Proposal A covers 100 mm; Proposal B covers 200 mm. Their horizontal sampling distances are 0.05 and 0.10 mm per pixel respectively. An invented 0.30 mm feature spans six samples in A and three in B. The same image width therefore describes different object detail.

This arithmetic assumes a locally uniform scale and uses fictional dimensions. It establishes a sampling comparison, not guaranteed detection, dimensional accuracy or a universal minimum pixel requirement. Lens contrast, motion and the actual feature remain separate evidence questions.

Put the requirement on the image

Ask for an annotated image or drawing that identifies the required coverage, the smallest relevant feature and the positions at which it may appear. Retain the pixel dimensions used for the calculation; a resized presentation slide is not the original image grid.

Compare the proposed systems using the same object definition. If a layout revision expands the view, repeat the sampling calculation before accepting the unchanged camera model as an unchanged inspection capability. The review record should make a coverage improvement and a detail trade visible together.

Customer Questions

Does the megapixel count define the viewed area?

No. Keep the actual field dimensions with the image dimensions.

Do six samples guarantee detection?

No. The example compares sampling only; the complete task needs its own evidence.

What changes when the view doubles on the same grid?

The object distance represented by each sample doubles in that direction.
