Carbon percentage and a compositional index can order two records differently.
Name the expression
TWI describes several carbon-equivalent formulae and their different application bases. Its IIW expression includes carbon plus contributions from manganese and other alloying elements. Primary reference: TWI technical explanation.
For this exercise, CEIIW = C + Mn/6 + (Cr+Mo+V)/5 + (Ni+Cu)/15, with the input elements in mass percent. Keep that exact expression with the result instead of comparing unexplained CE fields from different conventions.
Compare invented compositions
Take fictional A with C = 0.10 and Mn = 0.60, and B with C = 0.15 and Mn = 0.12. Set the other listed element contributions to zero solely for this teaching comparison. CEIIW is 0.20 for A and 0.17 for B.
A has less carbon but the larger calculated index. This reverses a carbon-only ranking without implying either steel is approved for a joint. The numbers set no preheat requirement, cracking threshold or permitted material grade.
Keep the record auditable
Store formula identity, composition units, each element input and the calculated index. Record missing or unreported elements as unresolved data rather than silently substituting zero in an actual material assessment.
Ask which expression and application basis the supplier used, then retain thickness, joint and process evidence separately. A chemistry index can organize a review; it does not replace the complete conditions needed to evaluate weldability or certify an actual fabrication route.
Customer Questions
What are the fictional IIW results?
0.20 for A and 0.17 for B.
Does lower carbon guarantee a lower IIW index?
Other stated element contributions can change the ranking.
Are missing actual elements automatically zero?
Keep them unresolved until their input basis is established.
