Chipbreaker Operating Windows: Feed and Depth Belong with the Insert Geometry

Read an insert chip-control diagram as a feed-and-depth region for the identified geometry rather than a universal setting.

Library dates organize the collection. Actual publication and revision dates are shown separately.

An operating point on a chip-control map has two coordinates and a specific insert identity.

Retain both diagram axes

Sandvik describes insert working regions through combinations of feed and cutting depth associated with chip control. The geometry identity belongs to that map. Primary reference: Sandvik technical guide.

Test a fictional map boundary

Imagine a deliberately simplified teaching rectangle covering feed 0.05–0.15 mm/rev and depth 0.4–1.0 mm. Point A at 0.10 and 0.8 lies inside both intervals. Point B keeps feed at 0.10 but moves depth to 1.2; it lies outside the invented depth boundary.

If feed changes to 0.03 while depth remains 0.8, the new point instead lies outside the feed boundary. These rectangles and numbers are invented for reading coordinates. They are not a copied supplier working region, an approved insert choice or a machining recommendation.

Connect the map to the actual process

Keep map revision, insert geometry, material context and axis units with the proposed point. Preserve whether the depth is radial, axial or another defined quantity. A single favorable feed value cannot establish that the full point belongs to the region.

Treat an actual map as evidence for its stated conditions, then assess chip observations and the rest of the process. Membership is not a guarantee of universal chip control. The practical decision is whether the cited diagram supports the proposed coordinates and whether a change moved the point beyond its documented scope.

Customer Questions

Is one feed coordinate enough?

The matching depth and map identity are required.

Where is fictional point B outside?

The invented depth interval.

Is the teaching rectangle a supplier region?

Its boundaries are expressly fictional.
