A zero difference between left and right circular absorption does not mean that both absorptions are zero.
Define the signed difference
Circular dichroism concerns the difference between absorption for left- and right-circularly polarized light. This guide states Delta A = AL - AR. The signed difference is a different quantity from either ordinary absorbance observation; the polarization and sign convention must remain attached to the result. Primary reference: IUPAC: dichroism.
Equal left and right observations yield a zero difference even when both are positive. A difference measurement therefore cannot be read as total absence or amount of absorption. Interpretation also requires the sample, wavelength and measurement conditions.
Calculate two original comparison rows
In a fictional row, AL = 0.51 and AR = 0.50, giving Delta A = +0.01. Their arithmetic mean is 0.505, which is another explicitly calculated quantity. Reversing the stated subtraction would give -0.01 without changing either underlying observation.
In a second fictional row, AL = AR = 0.50. Delta A is zero while the two ordinary absorbance values remain 0.50. The example demonstrates arithmetic separation of difference and level, not a spectrum, a structural assignment or a conclusion about the optical activity of a real preparation.
Keep both observations available
Create columns for AL, AR, their polarization convention, wavelength, Delta A formula and the calculated difference. Retain the underlying readings where available so a sign or transcription question can be investigated directly. Label a computed mean separately rather than calling it a circular-dichroism value.
Before chemical interpretation, establish the appropriate measurement and sample evidence. A small or zero difference alone cannot substantiate a complete structure, purity or composition decision. This worksheet sets no detection threshold and does not assert that any HM machinery includes a circular-dichroism instrument.
Customer Questions
Does zero Delta A require zero AL?
The equal 0.50 readings give zero difference.
Why can the displayed sign change?
The subtraction convention can be reversed.
Is the mean 0.505 a CD difference?
It is a separately calculated level.
