A file can change its colour interpretation or its colour values at different stages. Keep the transformation history before comparing a revised export with its master.
Distinguish interpretation from recalculation
Assigning a profile changes how existing colour values are interpreted without itself recalculating those values. Converting to another profile recalculates values for the destination space. The two operations belong on different rows of a transformation record. Primary reference: Adobe: assigning profiles and converting colour data.
Keep the source master and identify each import, conversion and export stage. An unchanged colour-mode label or familiar file name does not show that the numeric data and interpretation remained unchanged. A later application may apply its own policy when opening the file.
Trace a fictional conversion chain
Imagine a master in source space A is converted to destination space B for a release. A later recipient opens that export, converts it to space C and then converts it back to B. The resulting file should not be assumed identical to the first B release merely because both now carry the same destination label.
Gamut handling, precision and applied transformations can make the route matter. This scenario supplies no actual error value or guarantee that every round trip loses visible quality. It establishes why the original master and the exact conversion history are needed for a meaningful comparison.
Compare against the intended baseline
Record profile identities and conversion settings for the approved release, including whether an operation assigned or converted. Keep the actual output file with that record. If a revision changes wording only, check whether its export route also altered the colour data unexpectedly.
Use the retained master to prepare authorized new destinations rather than relying on an undocumented chain of secondary exports. Review the new proof through the agreed output condition. The evidence should identify which source and transformations produced the compared result, so a changed appearance can be traced before another corrective conversion is added.
Customer Questions
Does assigning a profile necessarily recalculate values?
No. It changes their interpretation.
Does converting back guarantee the first export's exact data?
No. Preserve and compare the actual files and transformation route.
Which baseline should remain available?
Retain the approved source master and its release history.
