Component Label Numbers: A Local Segmentation ID Is Not Persistent Object Identity

Keep the labeling run and input image behind a component number before using it as a persistent physical identity.

Library dates organize the collection. Actual publication and revision dates are shown separately.

A component label identifies a region within a labeling result. Reusing the same number in another image does not by itself match a physical object.

Retain local label meaning

A component label matrix assigns distinct integer values to foreground regions within its image result, with background identified separately. That local region identifier does not itself define correspondence across different images. Tracking physical identity requires another matching rule and its evidence beyond the region number alone. Primary reference: MathWorks component label matrices.

For an original worksheet, keep the input image, connectivity and labeling-run identity with the label value. Distinguish a display color attached to a label from a physical object identifier. A changed local number can arise from another region collection or numbering convention.

Renumber fictional regions

Define a teaching scheme that numbers separated foreground regions from left to right. In frame A, left region P is label 1 and right region Q is label 2. In a later hypothetical frame, P is absent and the only retained region Q is numbered 1 under that stated scheme.

Label 1 therefore refers to different region records across these frames. This is an expressly defined numbering illustration, not a claim about a library's guaranteed ordering or an algorithm's tracking result. Whether Q is the same physical object remains a separate correspondence question.

Preserve the matching evidence

Prepare an original region table carrying frame identity, local label and geometry. If records are linked across frames, retain the explicit matching criterion and handling of missing or merged regions. Do not use equality of label numbers as the whole proof of correspondence.

The guide provides no HM tracker capability or object-identity guarantee. Its reader decision is whether a local segmentation identifier has been mistaken for a persistent identity. Keep those meanings separate when region measurements from several images are combined into another report.

Customer Questions

Is label one persistent in the fictional numbering scheme?

No. Its associated region can change across frames.

Does a display color establish physical identity?

No.

What must accompany a cross-frame match?

Its explicit correspondence rule and evidence.
