Steam and circulating hot water deliver energy through different state changes. Compare their inlet-to-outlet enthalpy paths.
Define the Thermal Model
Condensing steam can provide latent energy, while single-phase hot water gives a sensible enthalpy decrease. Spirax Sarco’s steam-consumption method relates required heat rate to the steam-side energy released. Utility temperature by itself is insufficient to calculate required mass flow; the outlet state belongs in the basis.
Compare a Hypothetical Case
For an invented 30 kW duty, assume condensing utility releases 2,000 kJ/kg. The ideal steam requirement is 0.015 kg/s, or 54 kg/h. An invented hot-water utility with cₚ = 4 kJ/(kg·K) and a 10 K drop releases 40 kJ/kg and needs 0.75 kg/s. These are energy-flow comparisons, not interchangeable piping specifications.
Complete the Engineering Review
Write the incoming state, outgoing state and useful specific enthalpy change for each alternative. Add losses and returning-fluid constraints explicitly. Keep the energy calculation separate from transfer area, circulating-pump duty and condensate drainage. A low calculated steam mass flow cannot demonstrate that the steam distribution or trap arrangement is suitable.
The processing-tank enquiry should identify which utility arrangement is actually offered. This guide does not assert that a catalog vessel supports either option. Supply the proposed utility conditions and ask for the corresponding mechanical and thermal design.

Customer Questions
Are equal utility temperatures equivalent?
Their energy-release paths can differ.
Can hfg always be used alone?
Match the actual inlet and outlet states.
Does this comparison size pipes?
No. Hydraulic and drainage checks are separate.
