An interval around the average does not describe the same thing as an interval for future individual outcomes.
Identify what the interval is meant to cover
A confidence interval addresses an estimated parameter such as the mean. A prediction interval addresses a future observation under the model. A statistical tolerance interval addresses a stated proportion of the population with a stated confidence. Those targets differ, so their percentages and limits cannot be substituted merely because all are printed as a lower and upper value.
Three hypothetical buyer questions
One buyer asks how precisely the trial estimates average fill mass. Another asks about the next individual fill. A third asks for an interval intended to cover a stated share of process outcomes at a stated confidence. These are three different requests, even when all start from the same trial table.
Write the question in a sentence before discussing a calculated range. For a tolerance interval, keep coverage and confidence as separate entries. Neither that interval nor a prediction interval automatically becomes a product acceptance specification. The examples do not set a sample plan or acceptance requirement for HM equipment.
Request a labeled result with its assumptions
Ask the analyst to identify the interval type, parameter or population, model, confidence level, any required coverage proportion and sample basis. Retain whether the calculation is one-sided or two-sided. A result copied without these labels cannot reliably answer the original question.
In a machinery quotation discussion, attach the approved requirement to the analysis request. Review whether the available observations represent the condition where the interval will be used. Keep engineering specification limits in a separate field; statistical estimates describe the data and model rather than replacing the buyer’s design requirement.

| Review question | Reference or observation to retain |
|---|---|
| What must be covered? | Mean, individual outcome or population proportion |
| Are two percentages required? | Coverage and confidence separately |
| What is the governing specification? | Approved reference outside the interval estimate |
Customer Questions
Is a confidence interval for the mean a prediction interval?
No. Their target quantities and uncertainty contributions differ.
Does tolerance mean an engineering drawing tolerance here?
No. A statistical tolerance interval has a population-coverage interpretation.
Can an interval replace the agreed acceptance limit?
Only an explicitly approved decision method can connect the estimate to acceptance.
