A cumulative departure can reveal a sustained change that looks small in each individual reading.
Accumulation changes the plotted quantity
CUSUM methods accumulate departures relative to an identified in-control reference, sometimes with standardization or additional method parameters. Their plotted quantity differs from a raw measurement. Interpretation requires the selected formulation and monitoring design; a simple cumulative sum is not automatically a complete control chart or decision rule.
A hypothetical unstandardized illustration
Take an illustrative reference of 100 and three observations of 101, 101 and 101. Their deviations are 1, 1 and 1, so a simple cumulative-deviation series is 1, 2 and 3. That rising sequence describes persistence relative to the reference, not an individual reading of 3 or three rejected products.
An operational CUSUM design may use a different recursion and decision parameters. The example intentionally omits a decision threshold and supplies no HM monitoring configuration. It shows why the exported series needs a method label.
Retain configuration and reset events
State the monitored characteristic, reference value, scaling, chosen CUSUM formulation, decision parameters and baseline basis. Preserve raw observations and collection order. Mark restarts and any recalibration of the reference so a reviewer can reconstruct the statistic.
Ask what size and type of change the method is intended to detect and how false signals are considered in its design. Send those requirements to the analyst instead of copying parameters from an unrelated example. In an equipment discussion, an identified cumulative trend is a question for investigation, not proof of a particular component fault.

Customer Questions
Is a simple cumulative sum a complete monitoring design?
No. A decision method needs additional identified design choices.
Is a cumulative value an individual product reading?
No. It represents an accumulated statistic.
Does a trend identify the physical cause?
No. Investigate process and measurement context.
