The same digits can suggest different dates to different readers. A field order and calendar definition are part of the printed information.
State the fields rather than guessing them
A defined date representation identifies how year, month and day are arranged. RFC 3339 specifies a full-date form using a four-digit year followed by month and day. Its Internet timestamp context does not automatically prescribe a packaging-label format. Primary reference: RFC Editor: RFC 3339 date and time representation.
For printed information, retain the agreed field order, separators and calendar basis. A two-digit year can need an additional interpretation rule. The review must also identify what date the field represents, rather than treating a correct-looking calendar string as approval of its underlying event.
Interpret a fictional ambiguous string
Imagine a draft prints 03/04/25 without a defined order. One reader may interpret 3 April, while another may interpret March 4. Replacing it with an expressly defined year-month-day string resolves that particular order ambiguity, but does not establish which date the record was supposed to contain.
This example gives no required regulatory label wording, expiry calculation or universal format instruction. It identifies two separate review questions: the intended calendar value and the approved representation used to communicate it. Both must remain visible in the evidence.
Compare source meaning and print output
Document the field's authorized meaning and compare the stored calendar value with the printed string under the approved format. Include boundary examples that reveal field-order errors, such as a day greater than twelve where applicable. Do not rely only on dates whose components can be interchanged unnoticed.
If an import or locale change alters formatting, reassess the released output against the defined rule. Retain the source value and the final proof with their file identities. The aim is an unambiguous, correct representation of the intended information; choosing a familiar separator by itself does not achieve that review.
Customer Questions
Does RFC 3339 prescribe every packaging date label?
No. Its timestamp context is cited as a defined representation example.
Does a clear format establish the intended event date?
No. Verify the underlying value and field meaning too.
Why use examples with a day greater than twelve?
They can expose an otherwise concealed month-day interchange.
