Dead Volume and Hydraulic Residence: Define the Active Fluid Inventory

Use the volume participating in the selected flow model when calculating V/Q. A vessel’s total inventory may include a separate inactive region.

Define the Process Model

MIT’s residence-time lecture includes stagnant volume in a non-ideal mixing model. Such a region is not automatically represented by the active-volume time constant. Distinguish geometric capacity, actual filled inventory and participating flow volume before assigning one residence figure to the whole system.

Compare a Hypothetical Case

Imagine an invented vessel holding 100 L, with an idealized 20 L region completely isolated from the through-flow. At 10 L/min, the participating 80 L gives an 8 min time constant, while total inventory divided by flow gives 10 min. The isolated material has no finite exit time in that stated model, so reporting only eight minutes for all material would also be misleading.

Complete the Engineering Review

Mark the participating and proposed inactive regions on a model drawing. Record how the active-volume inference was obtained and whether material exchanges slowly with the other region. Slow exchange is different from complete isolation and requires an appropriate time-history treatment. Avoid declaring dead volume from a single local delayed signal or from the vessel’s shape alone.

For a processing-tank enquiry, provide real geometry and tracer or other process evidence. The 20 L region is fictional, not an HM construction finding. This guide addresses the volume boundary of a residence calculation rather than promising a particular mixing performance from overall capacity.

Customer Questions

Is nameplate capacity always the active volume?

Use the actual filled and participating boundaries.

Does the isolated region exit after eight minutes here?

It has no finite exit in the stated completely isolated model.

Can one slow probe prove a dead region?

Additional spatial and time-history evidence is needed.
