A second unit display can help a receiver, but its rounded text should not silently replace the primary dimension.
Identify primary value and alternate display
Alternate dimension units use a conversion relationship and their own display format or precision. They are a representation of a quantity already defined in primary units. Keep both unit identities and the applicable factor with the annotation. Primary reference: Autodesk: alternate-unit conversion factors and display precision.
A rounded alternate value can differ from the full converted value. Reusing that shorter text as a fresh primary requirement can introduce another rounding step. Determine which value governs the handoff rather than assuming the two printed strings carry identical numerical detail.
Trace a fictional metric-to-inch display
Suppose an invented primary length is 25.000 mm. Using 25.4 mm per inch gives approximately 0.984252 inches. A three-decimal alternate display shows 0.984 inches. Converting that displayed number back gives 24.9936 mm, a difference of 0.0064 mm from the stated primary length.
The example demonstrates representation rounding, not a manufacturing error or permissible tolerance. It also does not prescribe which unit a drawing must use. The relevant question is whether the receiver compares the intended primary definition or a rounded secondary representation.
Preserve the authoritative interpretation
Identify the primary unit and any stated role of the alternate display in the released drawing. Retain the actual nominal definition when transferring dimensions into another system. Check the conversion factor and precision rather than entering a convenient secondary string without its context.
For a mating interface described in another unit system, compare equivalent quantities using the agreed basis. Handle actual tolerances according to their specified interpretation; do not assume a display multiplier alone supplies that rule. A dual-unit annotation is useful when its conversion and authority remain clear to both sides of the handoff.
Customer Questions
Is a rounded alternate display the full converted value?
Not necessarily. It can omit numerical detail.
What is the fictional back-converted 0.984 inches?
24.9936 mm using 25.4 mm per inch.
Should governing units be inferred from familiarity?
No. Retain the released drawing's intended primary definition.
