Duplex Page Orientation: Keep the Flip Edge with the Print Proof

Keep the selected turn edge and sheet orientation with a two-sided print proof.

Library dates organize the collection. Actual publication and revision dates are shown separately.

A front and back can each be individually upright yet become inconsistent when the sheet is turned in the intended way. Test the actual turn convention.

Identify the sheet turn

Duplex output includes a choice of the edge around which the sheet is turned. The printer driver controls the available handling options. Keep that choice with the page orientation instead of describing every two-sided job as the same operation. Primary reference: Adobe: duplex printing and the selected flip edge.

Define how the user will turn the finished piece. A book-like turn and a top-edge turn can require different back-page orientations. The front image's upright appearance alone does not determine what the reverse will look like after the intended physical movement.

Test a fictional front-back proof

Imagine a portrait proof with a large TOP arrow on both faces. Print a test copy and turn it around the agreed edge. Observe whether the reverse arrow points toward the same intended top. Then compare the other turn route so the chosen convention is explicit.

The test uses no actual printer capability or universal driver instruction. A landscape document can change which physical edge is described as long or short. Keep the actual sheet geometry rather than applying a remembered menu choice to every layout.

Retain the output convention with release

Record page orientation, front-back order and selected flip handling alongside the proof. Include a labelled physical sample when the final product's turn is central to its use. Identify whether imposition or a later conversion also rotates a page after the original artwork export.

When the output route changes, repeat the two-face orientation check with the actual release. A composite screen view of two pages does not demonstrate the printed sheet's turn behaviour. Approve the intended reading route and its observed front-back result together before removing the temporary orientation references.

Customer Questions

Does duplex describe the turn edge completely?

No. Retain the chosen edge and page orientation.

Why use TOP arrows on a test?

They make the physical front-back relationship observable.

Is a remembered long-edge choice universal?

No. Check the actual sheet geometry and output route.
