Keep the restraint model

An ideal Euler column uses critical force π²EI/(KL)², with K representing effective length. COMSOL identifies K = 1 for the pinned-pinned case. Primary reference: local buckling model.

The relevant I is for the assessed buckling direction. End rotation and lateral constraints belong to the same model as K. A compressive material strength value does not by itself describe the elastic instability of a slender member.

A hypothetical restraint comparison

Assume E = 200 GPa, I = 1×10⁻⁸ m⁴ and L = 1 m. With an explicitly assumed K = 1, the equation gives approximately 19.74 kN. An ideal fixed-free comparison using K = 2 gives approximately 4.935 kN. The fourfold difference arises from the squared effective length.

These are theoretical critical loads for invented models, not permitted service loads. Real imperfection, eccentricity, connection stiffness and material behavior can alter the assessment. Calling an end fixed in a drawing does not demonstrate the restraint needed by the ideal case.

Prepare the instability question

Sketch lateral and rotational restraints at both ends and identify the weakest direction. Record the unsupported length separately from KL. If a supplier analysis uses a different effective-length convention, retain its definition beside the comparison.

Ask the responsible designer how actual geometry and imperfections are treated and whether an elastic column model is applicable. Do not turn a linear-buckling output into an installed load rating. This guide describes no HM structural capacity; it helps prevent support assumptions from disappearing behind a single compressive-force number.

Customer Questions

Can K be selected independently of supports?

It belongs to the restraint model.

Does doubling effective length halve critical load?

The ideal equation reduces it by a factor of four.

Is Euler critical load a safe working load?

A real design assessment must establish permitted loading.
