An EWMA combines current data with earlier information. Its weight and starting basis are part of the method.
A weighted statistic has memory
An exponentially weighted moving average combines the latest observation with the previous weighted value. A smaller current-data weight retains more prior influence. This monitoring statistic can help examine small or gradual changes, but its limits and interpretation require a representative baseline and appropriate data assumptions. It is not an unlabelled smoothing substitute for raw evidence.
A hypothetical recursion
Let an illustrative starting value be 100 and the current-data weight be 0.2. If the next observation is 105, the updated weighted value is 0.2 times 105 plus 0.8 times 100, or 101. The observed value remains 105; the monitored statistic is 101.
The example provides no recommended weight or HM control setting. It demonstrates why exporting only the smoothed line loses individual observations. Preserve both series and identify how the initial statistic was obtained.
Agree the monitoring configuration
Record the characteristic, units, observation timing, weight, starting value, limit method and baseline dataset. Keep resets or configuration changes identifiable. If gaps, dependence or intentional condition changes exist, ask whether the selected method still answers the monitoring question.
When a supplier receives a chart, include the raw values and the method configuration. Do not treat a smoothed response as evidence that an individual outlying item disappeared. Define the investigation response and product-disposition process separately. A monitoring method detects patterns under its assumptions; it does not itself authorize an operating adjustment.

Customer Questions
Is the EWMA the latest measured value?
No. It combines that value with prior information.
Is 0.2 prescribed for HM equipment?
No. It is used only in the arithmetic illustration.
Should a method reset be recorded?
Yes. It changes the history carried into the monitoring statistic.
