Isolation needs a defined boundary; an isolated signal channel does not describe every path through a system.
Draw the two electrical domains
TI describes galvanic isolation as electrical separation of domains while transferring signals or power across an isolation barrier. The claimed boundary should identify those domains. Primary reference: TI isolation overview.
Start with a block drawing showing the signal source, receiving function and their electrical references. Mark the stated isolated path and its component evidence. Then show other connections separately, including power, auxiliary signals and cable-related paths relevant to the actual system. The drawing makes the claim's extent reviewable.
A hypothetical incomplete isolation description
Imagine a fictional interface proposal saying isolated signal input. Its block diagram shows an isolated signal transfer but gives no basis for an additional shared power connection. The correct documentation response is to ask what boundary is actually established and which remaining paths are intentional. It is not to assume the entire assembly has no electrical relationship across the two domains.
Make a path matrix with signal, power and auxiliary connections as rows. For each, record whether isolation is claimed, the supporting component reference and the actual relationship. Leave unknown cells visible until the design documentation resolves them.
Keep purpose and evidence separate
Isolation can serve an identified signal or system-design purpose, but a generic label does not establish every protective requirement, certification or immunity result. Ask which rating and verification apply to the actual implementation rather than borrowing a technology overview as system approval.
Retain the accepted boundary drawing with later revisions. A replacement that preserves one signal function may change another path. This guide supports a complete boundary question without prescribing circuitry, removing required connections or claiming that an isolated interface guarantees noise-free data.
Customer Questions
Does an isolated signal label cover all power paths?
No. Identify the boundary and each remaining connection.
Does a technology overview certify the complete machine?
No. System evidence has its own scope.
What should a replacement review preserve?
The defined isolation boundary and the relationships of remaining paths.
