A short exposure does not necessarily mean that every row observed the pack at the same instant. Row timing can alter the recorded shape.
Separate exposure from readout
A global shutter exposes the pixels over a common interval. A rolling shutter offsets the exposure timing of successive rows. Even a global-shutter image may be read out row by row after exposure; that does not turn its exposure into a rolling one. Primary reference: Basler: electronic shutter types.
For a moving printed edge, the relevant question is when each row observed the object. A camera's interface speed or headline frame rate cannot replace this timing description. Keep the actual shutter architecture with the proposed image evidence.
Compare fictional row positions
Consider an invented 500-row rolling image with a 20-microsecond interval between row starts. Its first-to-last start difference is 499 × 20 microseconds = 9.98 milliseconds. At a constant projected speed of 0.50 m/s, the object travels 4.99 mm between those starts.
A 0.10-millisecond exposure during each row would separately correspond to 0.05 mm of travel. The example distinguishes inter-row displacement from within-exposure blur. It does not describe a real camera, predict a complete distorted shape or establish an acceptable speed.
Choose evidence for the motion
Request the row-timing information applicable to the proposed model and acquisition mode. Retain the motion direction relative to the image rows, because changing that geometry can change the observed shape. Show the original moving-object frames alongside any stationary reference.
If the trial uses a flash or another synchronized illumination method, preserve its actual timing and documented compatibility. Do not infer a global exposure merely from a sharp-looking example. The evidence should explain the acquisition interval represented by the image before a dimensional or classification conclusion is made.
Customer Questions
Can a global shutter still read rows sequentially?
Yes. Exposure timing and subsequent readout are different operations.
Does short exposure remove every rolling effect?
No. Row start times can still differ.
Which direction belongs in the trial record?
Keep object motion relative to the sensor's row direction.
