A 12-bit output format names a numeric representation. It does not by itself certify 12 bits of useful information about a packaging surface.
Identify each depth in the chain
The depth used at the sensor, during internal processing and in the transmitted pixel format can differ. Keep those stages separately in the proposed configuration. A final file label may describe only the output representation, leaving earlier processing unresolved. Primary reference: Basler: sensor, transfer and output bit depth.
An unsigned 12-bit code provides 4,096 possible numeric levels, from 0 to 4,095. This count says how many codes can be represented. It does not establish which differences between a real surface's bright and dark regions remain distinguishable above the acquired variation.
Compare fictional code ranges
Suppose an invented image stores a useful range between codes 1,000 and 1,200 in a 12-bit format. It is still a 12-bit file even though that example uses only a portion of the available codes. Rescaling the display to look higher in contrast does not identify additional scene information.
Similarly, saving an 8-bit image into a container able to hold more levels does not recreate values discarded earlier. These examples concern representation only. They assign no actual sensor noise, physical dynamic range or acceptance limit to any machine or camera.
Ask what the task needs to distinguish
Define the surface or print distinction being reviewed, then request original data with the processing stages recorded. Keep any clipping, scaling or display adjustment visible in the record. Compare the decision feature at its actual acquired scale rather than counting advertised bits.
When competing proposals use different depths, check whether their evidence describes equivalent acquisition and processing conditions. A change in representation can matter to later calculations, but its benefit must be demonstrated for the task. Keep the useful-contrast question open until the actual observation and variation evidence supports the decision.
Customer Questions
How many unsigned codes can 12 bits represent?
4,096, including zero.
Does output bit depth identify internal processing depth?
Not necessarily. Record the stages separately.
Does a larger container restore lost information?
No. It cannot recreate distinctions already discarded from the source.
