Image Interpolation and Resampling: Record What Changed between Print Files

Identify the changed pixel grid and interpolation method before treating a resized raster as equivalent print evidence.

Library dates organize the collection. Actual publication and revision dates are shown separately.

Resampling changes the image data grid. The resulting file should be compared as a new representation, with its original source retained.

Identify whether the grid changed

Resampling recalculates pixel information when dimensions change. It differs from assigning a different physical-size or resolution interpretation to an unchanged grid. Keep the operation and its interpolation method with the new raster file. Primary reference: Adobe: image resizing and interpolation.

A revised image can have the same placed millimetre width while containing a different number of samples. That change affects the representation behind its fine edges and tonal transitions. Compare the original and revised data at the actual task locations rather than assuming equal physical size means identical evidence.

Follow a fictional downsample

Suppose an invented raster is reduced from 1,200 to 600 horizontal samples while retaining its placed width. Its sampling distance across that width doubles. An interpolation method may combine or select source information to supply the new output values, but the resulting 600-sample file does not retain all original samples as independent observations.

This example provides no image-quality threshold or preferred algorithm. A later enlargement to 1,200 output samples would create a new grid, rather than automatically recovering what the reduction discarded. The original source is needed if that finer information matters.

Compare the revised release

Preserve the source file and record the input and output dimensions for each resampling step. Identify whether an export preset applied another change after the explicit resize. Retain the released raster's identity so the receiver and reviewer examine the same representation.

Inspect small text, edges and other required features in a final-size proof of the revised output. A resampled photograph may still meet its intended purpose, while a functional fine feature may need different evidence. Approve the demonstrated result and its transformation record instead of treating a larger or smaller file size as the quality conclusion.

Customer Questions

Does resampling retain every original sample independently?

Not necessarily. It recalculates the output grid.

Does enlarging again recover discarded information automatically?

No. Keep the original source when its detail is required.

What should identify the changed data?

Record input dimensions, output dimensions and interpolation or export operations.
