A new array object can still reference an existing data buffer. Ownership needs to be distinguished from the appearance of another image variable.
Retain data ownership
An array view can use the same underlying data buffer with another set of metadata, while a copy duplicates data into independent storage. Editing a view can therefore affect the original buffer. The actual operation and ownership relationship matter before a derived image is treated as an independent preserved record. Primary reference: NumPy views, copies and shared buffers.
For an original worksheet, identify which arrays own independent samples and which share them. Do not infer ownership from variable names or displayed size. A conversion or indexing operation should retain its documented storage behavior when later processing changes its values.
Edit fictional shared and copied rows
Define original array A with rows [10,20] and [30,40]. In a teaching model, V shares A's first-row storage and C is an independent copy of that row. Assigning 99 to V's first value changes A's first row to [99,20], while C remains [10,20].
Assigning 77 to C's second value then gives C = [10,77] without changing A's second value 20. This invented exercise explicitly defines its view and copy relationships. It does not claim that every language's slice operation or every image-processing function shares storage.
Preserve evidence before modification
Prepare an original ownership map before any destructive image edit. Keep a separately retained input when the review needs comparison with original samples. Verify the particular function's copy or view behavior rather than assuming that assigning its result to another name preserved the input.
The guide claims no HM software implementation or memory policy. Its reader decision is whether a derived image can change another retained record through shared storage. That relationship should be known before an edited visualization is presented as evidence of unchanged acquired data.
Customer Questions
Does editing the fictional view change A?
Yes, because its storage is expressly shared.
Does editing the independent copy change A here?
No.
Does another variable name prove independent storage?
No. Ownership depends on the operation.
