Identify whether an IO-Link-capable device is using ordinary switching mode or active digital communication.

Name the active operating mode

The IO-Link interface specification describes SIO as a mode that bypasses the communication layers for an ordinary input/output signal. Link capability and active communication are different facts. Primary reference: IO-Link specification section 6, SIO.

The cited archived specification establishes this distinction, not a new-device recommendation. Confirm the current selected product’s supported modes and master requirements before defining what an integration should retrieve.

A hypothetical working switch with missing data

Imagine a position device lights an indicator and its ordinary switching signal reaches an input, while an application cannot retrieve the proposed digital identity. That observation may be consistent with a switching path; it does not prove an active IO-Link exchange.

Make separate rows for physical indication, ordinary signal observed, master-port mode, communication status and required digital field. A familiar connector and a working binary input cannot fill the last two rows. Neither does an absent identity alone establish a failed sensor; the documented mode and consumer path must first be known.

Preserve a mode-specific acceptance record

Ask the integration owner which mode is proposed and what evidence demonstrates it. If only ordinary switching is required, do not claim digital process or parameter information was accepted. If digital communication is required, retain the actual device/master identities and the expected records.

This guide provides no port-setting or energized test instructions. No IO-Link capability is assigned to an HM machine. Its purpose is to prevent an ordinary working signal from being described as proof of a richer communication function that the project has not demonstrated.

Customer Questions

Does IO-Link-capable prove active communication?

Identify the actual mode.

Can SIO provide ordinary switching?

That mode bypasses the communication layers.

Does an indicator prove a digital identity read?

The digital record needs separate evidence.
