In This Guide
A smaller compressed image can change the data around a sharp edge. Keep the released representation with the intended print or inspection use.
Identify what compression may discard
Lossy compression reduces data size by allowing information changes or loss; lossless compression preserves the represented image values through decoding. The distinction matters when fine edges or exact sample values are part of the intended use. Primary reference: Adobe: lossless and lossy image compression.
A file extension and a visual thumbnail do not provide the complete compression record. Retain the actual export settings and whether the document embeds images compressed separately. A PDF or another container can hold multiple images with different representation choices inside the same released file.
Compare a fictional edge handoff
Imagine a raster word with narrow strokes is exported as a heavily compressed preview for email. That preview may look readable at one display size while differing from the master near stroke boundaries. Reusing it as the only print or comparison source changes the data behind the edge.
This scenario does not assert a particular artifact, minimum quality value or universal prohibition of a format. The relevant question is whether the released representation retains the evidence needed by the task. Small file size alone cannot answer it.
Keep preview and master roles explicit
Identify which file is the approved output master and which is only a convenient viewing copy. Retain the original source and compare the actual release at the intended physical scale. If exact image samples matter to a later comparison, verify that the chosen route preserves them.
When an export recompresses embedded images, reassess the affected small text and edges in that new file. Repeated convenient transfers can obscure where the change occurred. Preserve file identity and compression settings so a receiver does not accidentally substitute an email preview for the reviewed print source.
Customer Questions
Does smaller file size prove better output?
No. It may reflect discarded information.
Does a PDF guarantee all embedded images are lossless?
No. Inspect the images and their actual export settings.
How should an email preview be identified?
Label its viewing role separately from the approved output master.
