Distinguish the onset of bed support by gas from a fixed-bed pressure-drop reading, retaining the bed weight and pressure-tap boundary.
Identify the Material Response
NPTEL describes incipient fluidization as the condition where gas drag supports the bed weight after buoyancy is accounted for. The pressure difference belongs across the relevant bed, rather than every component of the air circuit. Primary reference: minimum-fluidization force balance.
Review a Hypothetical Comparison
For a fictional bed, buoyancy-corrected weight is 10 N and cross-sectional area is 0.010 square metres. Their quotient is 1,000 Pa. This is the pressure scale for the stated ideal force balance, not a calculation of the required gas velocity. A separate distributor pressure loss cannot be substituted for bed support.
Keep the Evidence with the Decision
Draw the pressure taps, distributor and bed on one sketch. Record the material inventory, bed area and fluid-density basis used for buoyancy. Put the observed pressure-versus-flow curve beside the calculation and distinguish the rising fixed-bed region from any observed bed motion. Note if material escape changes the inventory during that comparison.
The actual onset needs material- and apparatus-specific evidence. Cohesion, channels and changing bed structure can complicate the simple picture; the calculation does not certify uniform fluidization. Ask for the pressure boundary and observed state when reviewing a powder test. These teaching quantities specify neither an HM air system nor an operating airflow for a production machine.

Customer Questions
Does 1,000 Pa determine minimum gas velocity?
No. Velocity requires additional material and flow evidence.
Can total circuit pressure replace bed pressure drop?
No. Separate the pressure boundaries.
Does the force balance guarantee uniform motion?
No. Observe the actual bed response.
