Closing can remove a small background gap between foreground runs. The resulting connection belongs to a derived mask.
Retain the closing sequence
Morphological closing applies dilation and then erosion with the same structuring element. Gap behavior depends on that element, not merely on the word cleanup. A resulting foreground connection can change the membership of later connected regions even when the original foreground had separate parts. Primary reference: MathWorks morphological closing definition.
For an original review record, retain the initial mask and both operation stages. Specify the element offsets and boundary convention. Ask whether the downstream task needs a filled gap or needs evidence that the original supports were separated; those are different interpretations of the same transformed row.
Inspect a fictional central gap
Consider [0,1,1,0,1,1,0] with a centered horizontal three-position element. In a teaching calculation with explicitly zero-extended working rows, dilation produces seven ones over the displayed positions. Erosion of that displayed intermediate row gives [0,1,1,1,1,1,0].
The central background position becomes foreground, joining the two initial runs. This exercise defines its stage boundaries explicitly and does not claim a library's default padding. The connection is generated by the operation; it is not another observed pixel measurement of the underlying object.
Review region separation afterward
Prepare an original gap map with the input gap width, chosen element and changed positions. Run any later region count on the clearly identified final mask. Preserve the pre-closing count in a separate column if separation itself is part of the evidence needed by the inspection question.
Closing is not a universal permission to merge foreground. No example here establishes pack integrity, seal condition or an HM camera capability. The reader decision is whether a generated connection has been correctly distinguished from the connectivity of the original segmented support.
Customer Questions
Which stage comes first in closing?
Dilation, followed by erosion with the same element.
What changes in the fictional interior?
The central gap becomes foreground.
Is that new connection newly observed evidence?
No. It is produced by the image operation.
