Opening has an operation order. Its later dilation does not necessarily restore every foreground sample removed by the earlier erosion.
Keep the ordered operation
Morphological opening applies erosion and then dilation with the same structuring element. A narrow feature that fails the erosion neighborhood can disappear before the dilation stage. The element shape and orientation therefore belong to the operation definition, alongside the selected foreground convention. Primary reference: MathWorks morphological opening definition.
For an original worksheet, preserve both intermediate masks. Compare the final output with the initial support rather than assuming that an erosion and a dilation cancel. Also state boundary treatment explicitly so a disappearing border feature is not confused with the effect of neighborhood width.
Trace a fictional binary row
Use the invented row [0,1,0,1,1,1,0] and a centered horizontal three-position element. Define zero background beyond each working row for this teaching model. Erosion leaves [0,0,0,0,1,0,0]; dilation of that intermediate row gives [0,0,0,1,1,1,0].
The isolated foreground at index 1 is absent in the final row, while the original three-position run survives. This is an explicitly defined one-dimensional exercise, not an assertion about a software default or actual bottle-image geometry. A different element could produce another support.
Review which evidence disappeared
Build an original comparison sheet listing the original foreground, eroded support and final support. Mark which wanted feature positions were lost. If a downstream calculation uses the opened mask, identify that transformed input instead of describing the count as belonging to the unmodified segmentation.
Removing a feature does not establish that it was unwanted noise. The guide recommends no universal cleanup element and claims no HM inspection result. Its reader decision is whether the ordered operation preserves the particular foreground evidence required for the later question.
Customer Questions
Which operation occurs first?
Erosion, followed by dilation with the same element.
Does the isolated fictional sample return?
No. It is absent from the intermediate support.
Does removal identify physical noise?
No. Its meaning requires separate evidence.
