Calculate steam economy from external steam and evaporated water, then examine how vapor heat is reused.
Define the Phase or Process Boundary
NPTEL's evaporator definitions defines steam economy as water evaporated per mass of steam fed. GEA's multi-effect explanation describes using product vapor from one effect to heat another. Counting effects is not itself a measured economy.
Review a Hypothetical Comparison
Imagine a hypothetical reporting hour with 100 kg of external live steam and total water evaporation of 240 kg across three effects. Economy is 2.4 kg water/kg live steam. Assigned evaporation contributions of 75, 85 and 80 kg add to the 240 kg numerator. Counting the inter-effect vapor again as fresh steam would change the denominator and obscure the external utility boundary. Equally, simply reporting three effects would not establish an economy of three.
Keep the Evidence with the Decision
Draw the cascade and mark which vapor transfers heat internally. Keep startup steam, external heat inputs, condensate and the reporting interval visible. Compare a measured steady period with a comparable feed temperature and concentration requirement. Separate mass-based steam economy from a complete energy or electricity comparison.
The quantities are invented. Heat losses, boiling-point elevations and feed heating may change actual performance; the exercise promises no utility saving or available HM evaporator configuration.

Customer Questions
Does three effects prove economy equals three?
No. Use measured evaporation and external steam for the stated period.
Is internal vapor fresh live steam?
Keep internal heat reuse separate from the external utility denominator.
Is steam economy an electrical efficiency?
No. It is the stated evaporation-to-steam mass ratio.
