Multiple Sampling: Keep the Stage and Cumulative Count Together

A multiple-sampling record needs its stage number as well as the accumulated findings. The same count can fall under different stage boundaries.

The statistical question

Multiple sampling extends the staged idea beyond two samples. A cumulative nonconforming count is compared with the acceptance and rejection boundaries for the current stage; an undecided outcome calls for the next specified sample. Stage limits and permitted early decisions belong to the plan. A smaller stage sample does not by itself prove equivalent protection or lower total inspection.

An illustrative review example

Suppose fictional successive samples contain one, zero and two nonconforming items. The cumulative counts are one after stage one, one after stage two and three after stage three. The count of one appears twice but refers to different inspected quantities and possibly different boundaries. A worksheet that stores only the latest cumulative count cannot reconstruct which stage authorized the decision. No boundaries are recommended by these invented counts.

Prepare the evidence for discussion

Retain each stage quantity, new findings, running totals, current boundary and continue-or-stop decision. Give the reviewer the complete table rather than a final pass cell. For incoming change parts, confirm that the same lot and item-level criterion apply throughout. When estimating inspection workload, distinguish the maximum permitted stages from average sample number and from the actual quantity consumed by this particular lot.

Customer Questions

Is a stage count the same as the cumulative count?

The stage count concerns the new sample; the cumulative count adds all samples already inspected.

Can the same cumulative count have a different meaning later?

Yes. The inspected quantity and current stage boundaries may have changed.

Does the maximum stage count equal average workload?

The maximum stages and average sample number describe different aspects of inspection effort.
