A standard cell potential does not describe every composition of that cell reaction. A nonstandard calculation needs the reaction quotient, temperature and electron count together.
Retain the reaction direction and quotient
The Nernst relation is E = E° − (RT/nF) ln Q for a specified cell reaction. Q is dimensionless on its activity convention, and n is the electron count per reaction as written. Reversing the reaction changes its direction, quotient and potential reference together. Primary reference.
Calculate a fictional composition correction
Give a constructed reaction E° = 0.500 V, n = 2, T = 298.15 K and Q = 100. Use rounded constants R = 8.314 J/(mol K) and F = 96,485 C/mol. Its correction is approximately (8.314 × 298.15)/(2 × 96,485) × ln(100) = 0.05916 V.
The fictional model potential is therefore approximately 0.44084 V. At Q = 1, that composition correction would be zero on the same convention. The numbers identify no real electrodes, electrolyte, reference connection or HM instrument reading.
Keep the model separate from a measured voltage
Prepare an original potential calculation retaining the balanced reaction, activity expression, temperature and electron count. A concentration-based quotient needs its explicit approximation; pure-solid activities and other standard states follow the defined reaction convention. Keep those choices visible before substituting a reported composition.
The result is an equilibrium potential model, not a prediction of delivered current, voltage under load or reaction speed. Its decision is whether the change from a standard reference is consistent with the stated chemical composition. Any measured electrical response needs its own experimental boundary.
