Distinguish fundamental-current cancellation from triplen-harmonic addition in a stated three-phase model.

Separate the frequency components

Fluke explains that balanced fundamental phase currents can cancel in the neutral, while triplen harmonics can add in a four-wire system. Primary reference: neutral harmonics.

Equal RMS magnitudes alone do not describe the relative phase of every frequency component. A complete current waveform may contain a fundamental and several harmonics. Compare the same frequency components with their applicable phase relationships before summing them.

An invented component comparison

Assume three fictional 1 A RMS fundamental components separated by 120°. Their ideal vector sum is zero. Now also assume each phase contains a third-harmonic component of 0.20 A RMS and that these components align in phase in the neutral path.

The third-harmonic components then add to 0.60 A RMS at that harmonic frequency. Equal total phase-current magnitudes would not by themselves establish zero neutral current. These deliberately simplified waveforms identify a mathematical distinction, not a plant measurement or conductor-size recommendation.

Keep the evidence frequency-specific

Prepare a component table with frequency order, magnitude, phase and the claimed neutral sum. Retain whether the connection provides the neutral path being discussed.

A qualified electrical assessment needs the actual topology and waveform evidence. This worksheet explains why a balanced-looking set of phase-current numbers can leave a separate harmonic question unresolved without assuming that every observed neutral current has one confirmed cause.

Customer Questions

Do equal phase RMS readings prove zero neutral current?

They do not identify every component’s phase relationship.

Do third harmonics cancel like the fundamental here?

The stated in-phase triplen model adds them.

Does this size a neutral conductor?

Actual design requires the applicable electrical assessment.
