Keep clock synchronization separate from the timezone used to display a machine-data timestamp.
Separate the two time questions
RFC 5905 specifies NTP mechanisms for synchronizing clocks among distributed systems. A timezone display choice serves a different purpose from aligning those clocks. Primary reference: NTPv4 scope.
A screen showing the expected local hour does not prove that the underlying clock agrees with a reference. Conversely, two correctly aligned records can display different local hours. Keep clock evidence and display interpretation in separate columns.
A hypothetical shared instant
Imagine two proposed records refer to 10:00 UTC. One screen renders 10:00 at offset zero; another renders 15:30 at offset +05:30. The different visible hours can represent the same instant. Subtracting 5 hours 30 minutes from the second representation reconciles the displays without diagnosing clock drift.
Now suppose both screens show identical hours but one underlying clock is actually two minutes behind its relevant reference. Matching appearance would hide that disagreement. These examples describe representation and alignment separately; they do not report actual HM clock behavior or synchronization performance.
Request time-source evidence
Record the relevant timestamp source, synchronization method/status evidence, observation context and intended presentation timezone. Ask which clock supplies an event timestamp and how its alignment is assessed. A configured server address alone is narrower evidence than demonstrated ongoing clock behavior.
This guide supplies no NTP configuration or guaranteed timing accuracy. Keep allowed timing uncertainty with the application requirement when event ordering or age matters. The useful review separates the instant assigned by a clock from the human-facing representation chosen for that instant, avoiding unnecessary corrections to a display that simply uses a different offset.
Customer Questions
Does local-hour appearance prove synchronization?
Inspect the clock evidence separately.
Can different displayed hours represent one instant?
Different offsets can do that.
Does this prescribe an NTP accuracy?
The application needs its own timing requirement.
