Two overlapping objects can create different print separations depending on overprint or knockout behaviour. A composite preview may hide the distinction.
Identify what happens underneath
Knockout removes the underlying colour area where an opaque upper object occupies it. Overprint retains underlying printing contributions in the overlap. The resulting appearance depends on the actual inks and print conditions, so retained contributions do not imply a fixed colour outcome. Primary reference: Adobe: overprint and knockout behaviour.
Describe the intended overlap for each relevant object. A shape's displayed fill colour does not establish its separation behaviour. Text, strokes and other artwork objects can carry overprint attributes that need to be interpreted in the released output route.
Compare fictional overlap structures
Imagine a dark word placed over a coloured panel. In one hypothetical release, the panel's separation is removed beneath the word. In another, the panel remains there while the word's printing contribution is added. The page layout is identical, but the ink structure in that area differs.
This example gives no trapping width, press-registration allowance or universal instruction to overprint black. Those decisions need the real printing process and artwork requirements. Its purpose is to distinguish an output attribute from the apparent location of objects on a screen.
Inspect the released separations
Request an overprint-aware preview or separation evidence from the actual release file. Compare the expected upper and underlying contributions at critical overlaps. Record how the receiver's output route preserves, simulates or discards the attribute, instead of relying on a preview produced by an unrelated route.
Review the physical proof where appearance or legibility matters. The structural check should show that the intended contributions survive; the proof should support the resulting task requirement. If conversion or flattening changes the overlap handling, assess that new file rather than assuming the previous composite approval remains sufficient.
Customer Questions
Does knockout retain the underlying area?
It removes the underlying contribution in the occupied area.
Does overprint imply a fixed mixed colour?
No. Actual inks and print conditions affect appearance.
Is the object layout enough to establish overlap behaviour?
No. Inspect the released attributes and separations.
