A PDF can define several page rectangles. The rectangle visible in one viewer is not necessarily the final trim boundary used by the print workflow.
Identify each boundary's role
PDF page boxes describe different boundaries. The TrimBox identifies finished dimensions, the BleedBox identifies the relevant extra print region, and the MediaBox describes the full page extent. A CropBox controls a viewing or printing boundary and need not equal the intended finished size. Primary reference: Adobe: PDF page boxes.
Keep the named boxes and their coordinates with the artwork approval. Cropping a displayed view can hide content without removing it from the file. A viewer screenshot therefore does not establish what another output route will use as its physical page boundary.
Compare an invented size record
Suppose a fictional release has a 100 by 50 mm finished rectangle and a centred 103 by 53 mm bleed rectangle. The extra extent is 1.5 mm on each side under that stated centred arrangement. A larger media rectangle may also include marks outside those regions.
These dimensions are explanatory only, not a recommended bleed or sheet specification. The actual box positions matter as well as their widths. If the finished rectangle is not centred in the larger box, the same width difference does not establish equal extra extent at both edges.
Confirm the receiver's selected boundary
Ask which box the receiving workflow uses for placement, imposition and output. Compare that selection with the approved finished dimensions and extra edge artwork. Retain a named-box report or annotated drawing alongside the released PDF, so another reviewer can reproduce the interpretation.
Inspect content near each relevant edge and record any scaling introduced later. A correct TrimBox does not prevent a fit-to-page operation from changing the printed dimensions. Approve the actual file's boundaries and the output-size interpretation together before calling a visible page crop the final packaging size.
Customer Questions
Does the visible crop always define finished size?
No. Check the intended TrimBox and receiver's selected boundary.
Does changing a crop remove all hidden content?
No. A crop can only hide content in that view.
Do equal size differences imply equal margins automatically?
Only when the box positions establish the stated centred arrangement.
