Peck Drilling and Chip Evacuation: A Retraction Event Has a Defined Purpose

Review a peck-drilling trace through chip-clearance opportunities and noncutting movements, not depth count alone.

Library dates organize the collection. Actual publication and revision dates are shown separately.

Repeated returns can provide a chip-clearance opportunity while adding movements to the drilling trace.

Identify the repeated motion

Harvey describes a peck cycle as repeated entry and withdrawal with increasing depth, used to aid chip removal. Its purpose does not prove actual evacuation. Primary reference: Harvey technical explanation.

Compare fictional movement histories

Imagine a teaching trace advancing to depths 4, 8 and 12 mm, returning after the first two increments. A second trace reaches 12 mm in one continuous entry. Both end at the same depth, but their intermediate motion and chip-clearing opportunities differ.

If each invented return and re-entry pair occupies one second, the first trace adds two seconds beyond the assumed identical cutting time. That bookkeeping assigns no allowable peck size or real machine cycle. Actual acceleration, approach distance and chip movement remain unmeasured.

Check the physical outcome of each return

Record depth endpoints, withdrawal positions and observed chip-clearance events beside the motion trace. Distinguish a short reversal from a return that opens the relevant chip path; controller cycle names can conceal different movements.

Pair any cycle-time comparison with actual tool and chip evidence. More returns need not be better, and a continuous entry is not automatically suitable for the hole. This worksheet identifies whether the proposed intermediate movements address the real evacuation question without selecting a canned-cycle setting, recommending a drilling speed or promising that the final depth is free of retained chips.

Customer Questions

Do equal final depths imply equal traces?

Their intermediate movements can differ.

What is the invented added time?

Two seconds from the stated movement pairs.

Does withdrawal prove chips left?

Actual evacuation needs observation.
