Compare advection and diffusion over the same distance before drawing conclusions about a transport problem.
Define the Interface or Transport Basis
COMSOL explains high Péclet-number species transport as a regime in which flow transport dominates diffusion along the relevant direction. For a chosen process length L, speed U and molecular diffusivity D, the conventional comparison Pe=UL/D follows by dividing the characteristic diffusion time L²/D by the advection time L/U.
Review a Hypothetical Comparison
Take an invented length 0.0008 m, speed 0.008 m/s and diffusivity 4×10⁻¹⁰ m²/s. Advection over that length takes 0.10 s; the characteristic diffusion time is 1600 s. Their ratio is 16000. This compares two characteristic scales, not an exact mixing time. Applying an axial length to a transverse mixing question could give a misleading conclusion even though the arithmetic is correct.
Keep the Evidence with the Decision
Draw the direction and distance being compared. Keep the molecular species and its diffusivity with the velocity basis. If the decision concerns diffusion across a channel width, use that width and justify how the flow transports material in that direction. Distinguish a process-scale Pe convention from an element-scale number used by a numerical solver, which can contain a different length or factor.
Large axial Pe alone does not guarantee a uniformly mixed outlet or the validity of a simulation shortcut. The boundary conditions, geometry and transport direction remain part of the model.

Customer Questions
Does high axial Pe prove transverse mixing?
No. The direction and distance of the mixing question must be assessed separately.
Is L²/D an exact equilibration time?
It is a characteristic scale; exact behavior depends on the model and boundaries.
Can I compare two Pe values with different lengths?
Only after identifying those definitions and the decisions they address.
