A Sherwood-number correlation carries a coefficient and characteristic-length convention, not just a dimensionless name.
Define the Interface or Transport Basis
COMSOL's packed-bed theory, film-resistance section defines Sherwood number using a mass-transfer coefficient, characteristic length and diffusivity. Its discussion explicitly identifies a length convention and restrictions associated with empirical relations. Using Sh = kL/D requires the same L convention as the selected relation.
Review a Hypothetical Comparison
In an invented interface review, k=8×10⁻⁶ m/s, L=0.0007 m and D=4×10⁻¹⁰ m²/s give Sh=14. Replacing that length with twice its value gives Sh=28 while the physical k remains unchanged. Comparing those numbers as though transfer improved would confuse a definition change with an observed performance change. A sphere-radius convention and a sphere-diameter convention therefore cannot be mixed without conversion.
Keep the Evidence with the Decision
Before calculating k from a published Sh relation, copy the definitions of its length, velocity and concentration driving difference into the worksheet. Check geometry, flow range and fluid property conditions against the proposed case. Keep any independent coefficient estimate separate from a correlation-based prediction, and explain disagreement before using the prediction in a process review.
This guide does not apply the vendor's packed-bed correlations to an unrelated tank or membrane. A dimensionless result does not by itself extend a relation outside its original geometry and range.
Which coefficient and length definition belong to the chosen transfer correlation?
This blank worksheet is for your own project. It contains no H M machine trial result.

Customer Questions
Does a larger Sh always mean a higher measured k?
No. A changed length or diffusivity can also change the reported dimensionless value.
Can diameter replace radius without changing the correlation?
No. Preserve or correctly transform the relation's length convention.
Can a sphere correlation be used for any interface?
Its documented geometry and applicability must match the proposed model.
