pH and Hydrogen Activity: A Logarithmic Result Needs Its Definition

A pH difference describes a ratio on a logarithmic scale. Reading it as a linear difference in hydrogen amount gives the wrong comparison.

A pH difference describes a ratio on a logarithmic scale. Reading it as a linear difference in hydrogen amount gives the wrong comparison.

Retain the activity definition

pH is defined using the negative base-ten logarithm of dimensionless hydrogen-ion activity. Activity accounts for the solution environment through its stated convention. Substituting a molar concentration requires an additional approximation; it is not the definition itself. Primary reference.

Compare two fictional pH values

Compare constructed pH values of 3.0 and 5.0. Their hydrogen activities on the common convention are 10⁻³ and 10⁻⁵. The first is 100 times the second, because the difference of two pH units corresponds to a factor of 10².

These activities do not by themselves specify how many moles of acid were charged or how much base a liquid will consume. Two different chemical inventories can produce the same pH. The logarithmic result and the material balance should remain separate fields in a review.

Keep the measured result within its scope

Keep an original measurement record with the reported pH, measurement conditions and the applicable laboratory procedure. When comparing two records, establish that their method and solution conditions are comparable before interpreting the ratio. The arithmetic cannot correct an unidentified sensor or sampling problem.

This teaching example sets no cleaning strength, neutralization endpoint or pharmaceutical acceptance range. Its decision is whether a stated pH difference has been translated into the correct activity ratio. Equipment compatibility and buffering behavior require their own supporting information.

Customer Questions

What ratio follows from pH 3 versus pH 5?

A factor of 100 in hydrogen activity on the same convention.

Does pH directly state total acid moles?

No.

Is activity identical to molar concentration by definition?

No. A concentration substitution needs an explicit approximation.
