Two files can have identical dimensions while representing different observations. A binned grid and a cropped grid need different interpretation.
Name the combination method
Binning combines pixel values into output values. Depending on the camera and mode, this may involve summation or averaging, and the implementation can differ for monochrome and colour sensors. A crop instead selects a region without this combination. Primary reference: Basler: pixel binning.
Record the horizontal and vertical factors and the available combination mode. Identical width and height labels do not establish identical sampling, light response or noise behaviour. Avoid inferring a particular sensor implementation merely from the word binning on a proposal.
Compare two fictional smaller files
Start with an invented 2,000-column monochrome image covering 100 mm. Combining neighbouring columns in pairs across the full width yields 1,000 output columns across that coverage. Selecting only the central 1,000 original columns instead retains about 50 mm at the original scale.
For two invented source values of 30 and 50, a sum produces 80 while their average produces 40, before any applicable clipping or later processing. These values illustrate different representations, not a camera's real signal-to-noise improvement or an inspection performance guarantee.
Reopen the grid-dependent evidence
If the mode changes, revisit feature sampling, coordinate interpretation and calibration records that depend on the output grid. Keep the original acquisition settings with the comparison images. A prior pixel-distance conversion may no longer apply to the combined output grid.
Check the selected model's documented relationship between binning and ROI coordinates. Preserve horizontal and vertical factors separately, because unequal factors alter the displayed aspect relationship. Trial evidence should compare the same physical feature and identify which source values became each output value, rather than relying on equal file dimensions.
Customer Questions
Are averaging and summation identical?
No. They can produce different numeric output from the same source values.
Does a 1,000-column file identify the operation?
No. It may result from selection, combination or other processing.
Should an old pixel-distance conversion be reused automatically?
No. Review its basis after the output grid changes.
