PNP and NPN labels need a compatible input relationship, not only a matching supply voltage.
Identify both sides of the interface
Pepperl+Fuchs describes three-wire sensors as sourcing PNP or sinking NPN, with separate power and output connections. The receiving circuit's role belongs in the comparison. Primary reference: Pepperl+Fuchs three-wire outputs.
Record the actual output and input definitions, supply basis and accepted interface drawing. A voltage-range match does not establish the intended current path. Where a module uses sourcing or sinking terminology, read its diagram rather than guessing compatibility from a family name.
A hypothetical spare comparison
Imagine a fictional spare proposal with the same supply range and connector form as the original sensor, but a different stated switching-output architecture. The matching voltage and connector do not close the receiver-compatibility question. Mark the output difference and request the actual input/interface basis.
Make rows for sensor designation, output type, receiver type, state interpretation and approved interface reference. This example provides no HM pinout and does not instruct rewiring a sensor. It identifies a compatibility decision that cannot be replaced by nominal dimensions or voltage alone.
Preserve the complete signal contract
Ask how the responsible electrical designer represents on and off behavior at the actual receiver. Output function, loading and relevant fault interpretation may require their own evidence in addition to transistor architecture.
Keep the accepted output/input combination with the component revision. A later substitution should preserve that documented relationship or identify the reviewed change. This guide supports a clear spare or RFQ comparison without prescribing a universal wiring arrangement, treating every connector as having the same assignment or claiming that PNP and NPN are interchangeable because both are binary outputs.
Customer Questions
Does equal supply voltage prove output compatibility?
No. Identify both output and receiver roles.
Can connector shape replace the interface drawing?
No. Retain the actual accepted signal relationship.
Are PNP and NPN interchangeable binary labels?
No. Their output current-path architectures differ.
