Polygon Approximation: A Tolerance Can Remove Boundary Vertices

Keep approximation distance tolerance and coordinate units beside a simplified boundary.

Library dates organize the collection. Actual publication and revision dates are shown separately.

Reducing vertices can replace a small bend with a straight segment. The tolerance determines what departure is permitted.

Retain the distance criterion

Polygonal-chain approximation can remove vertices while respecting a specified maximum distance from original points to the reduced chain. The distance tolerance and coordinate units belong to that operation. A smaller vertex list is a derived representation, not evidence that the original boundary had fewer geometric changes. Primary reference: scikit-image polygonal-chain approximation tolerance.

For an original review sheet, retain both coordinate sequences and the approximation parameter. Check the implementation's parameter definition rather than assuming every simplification function interprets a numeric tolerance identically. A physical tolerance requires a separate coordinate-to-physical basis.

Simplify a fictional three-point chain

Take the open chain (0,0), (2,0.4), (4,0) in invented coordinate units. The middle point is 0.4 from the straight endpoint segment. With maximum permitted departure 0.3, that point must be retained; with departure 0.5, replacing the chain by its endpoints is permitted in this example.

The original chain length is 2√(2² + 0.4²), approximately 4.079. The endpoint segment has length 4. Fewer vertices and a permitted distance departure therefore need not preserve the original path length exactly. These values describe continuous teaching coordinates, not an acquired physical boundary.

Preserve changes required downstream

Prepare an original overlay marking removed bends and their departures from the retained segments. Identify whether later calculations use the original or reduced representation. If a small corner is required evidence, inspect its loss directly rather than relying on the reduced vertex count as a quality statement.

The guide recommends no universal approximation tolerance and certifies no HM boundary measurement. Its reader decision is whether an allowed representation error was retained with the simplified contour. Coordinate units, closure and the exact simplification definition should remain visible in any later comparison.

Customer Questions

What is the fictional middle-point departure?

Zero point four coordinate units.

Can a tolerance of 0.3 remove it here?

No. That departure exceeds the stated limit.

Must simplification preserve path length exactly?

No. The reduced representation can change it.
