Polymer Friction and Wear: Keep Pressure and Sliding Speed in the Application

Keep contact pressure and sliding speed with a polymer wear comparison.

Library dates organize the collection. Actual publication and revision dates are shown separately.

A low-friction label does not identify the actual contact duty.

Identify the contact conditions

igus discusses the product of surface pressure and sliding velocity as a plain-bearing application quantity. The underlying pressure and velocity remain important, not only their product. Primary reference: igus plain-bearing pv.

Record the contact geometry, load definition, motion and relevant environment. A material ranking for one contact pair or test should not be treated as a universal result for every polymer guide. Keep the actual material grade and mating surface with the evidence.

A hypothetical equal-product comparison

Assume fictional contact cases A and B. A uses0.5 MPa and0.4 m/s; B uses1 MPa and0.2 m/s. Both products are0.2 MPa·m/s, but their individual pressure and speed differ. The arithmetic does not establish that friction, temperature rise or wear behavior will be identical.

Prepare columns for pressure, velocity, duty pattern, material pair, lubrication basis and observed endpoint. The values are invented, not allowable limits or an HM wear test. Keep any actual supplier constraints on individual variables visible rather than replacing them with the equal product.

Compare evidence with the real task

Ask which conditions the offered material's wear information covers and which contact requirements remain unrepresented. A duty change can alter the comparison even when the nominal part size and material family remain unchanged.

Preserve the final applicability decision beside the test or calculation reference. The guide illustrates why a useful wear worksheet retains both variables and the interface conditions. It does not prescribe an allowable pv value, predict a replacement interval or guarantee that the lowest friction coefficient produces the most appropriate component for the actual machine duty.

Customer Questions

Does equal pv imply identical wear?

No. Individual variables and contact conditions still matter.

Is the teaching0.2 value an allowable limit?

No. It is invented arithmetic.

Should the mating surface be identified?

Yes. Retain the actual contact pair and its relevant conditions.
